In the wild this species can be found in open bush land and forests in 100 to 1000 m above sea level.

The stems are twining and reach a length of about 1,5 m. The leaves are 4,5 cm in length and 2,5 cm wide.

The chinese name of this species is Diao deng hua, a name which freely translated vaguely means 'ceiling light' and which indeed is also used for such lamps. Beyond that this name is also commonly used for several plants with hanging flowers, eg. Fuchsia spp., Hibiscus spp. or Malvaviscus spp.
