This is one of the dimorphic species from Madagascar.

The stem is as thick as a finger and has a very unusual fleshy brownish pink colouration. It bears lancet-shaped, dark brown to almost black leaves, that look a bit like thorns.

The flowers rise on long climbing stems and are quite large. The flower-tube is light beige coloured, the petals are strongly maize-yellow and have some reddish brown hairs.
