In the wild Ceropegia papillata can be found in mountainous areas in 1400 to 3000 m above sea level, where it scrambles in the surrounding vegetation.

The species has an up to 1 m long stem, The leaves are narrowly heart-shaped and about 5 cm in length.

The flowers of the form, which once was treated as a different species or variety (cordiloba), are very large and showy. They appear in larger groups of up to ten flowers between the leaf bases. The lower third, of the white or dusty whitish coloured flower tube, is conspicuous swollen and abruptly tapered upward. The petals are greenish or brightly yellow in colour and quite broad.

In Malawi this plant is called Chang'ombe resp. Fwafwalingo, its leaves but perhaps also its tuber are used here as a vegetable.
