The genus Ceropegia is quite widespread, it can be found in almost entire Africa, Arabia, Madagascar and on the Canary Islands, it occures in Asia as well as in the tropical forests of New Guinea.

There are about 235 species, subspecies and natural hybrides.

The plants are very polymorphic, there are climbers, twining species, upright shrubs, creeping ground-covering plants, succulent or not succulent. The only commonality they all share are the very special flowers, but from time to time these differ also from the typical lantern form.
